The Devil Wears Prada

...a movie review, of sorts.

"I don't have a choice," Andrea repeated numerous times throughout the movie.  She didn't have a choice but to work long hours, take abuse from the Devil, dress like everyone else at Runway Magazine, carry a Blackberry and be prisoner to it, miss her boyfriend's birthday party, and lose the essence of who she had once been.  She didn't have a choice if she wanted to get ahead.  And those choices resulted in her losing her boyfriend and best friends.  It resulted in a personal life explosion.

"I don't have a choice" is a mindset.  It's one I had for many years.   In reality, we DO have a choice.  Choices are completely within our control.

The "worlds" we enter put pressure on us to conform.  They have goals for us and want us to choose their goals.  Those "worlds" can be bosses, friends, parents, siblings, boyfriends/husbands, churches, communities, classmates, sorority sisters, etc. etc.  We're always a part of some "world".  So, will we conform?  Will we lose our real selves and give up our choices?  Or will we repeat over and over again, "I don't have a choice?"

[SPOILER WARNING]     In the end, Andrea made a hard but authentic choice.  She chose to be the real her - after the Devil (who in this case wore Prada) said, "I see a lot of myself in you, Ahhndrea."  That scared the crap out of her.

What "worlds" are you in right now?  Do they have goals for you?  If so, are those goals ones that you want for yourself?  Will they help you - or will they prevent you - from being the real you?
