You know that stuck feeling where you're just treading water, trying to swim, but getting nowhere? I was working at Aveda during college, which I loved! I thrived on the customer interaction, the sales, and the power of skincare, makeup and beauty products to empower women. I started wondering if I should take it a step further and try to become a manager. But soon after my focus changed, I started having less fun while working much harder! My managers must have known management wasn't for me, but I couldn't see it, and I kept fighting for a promotion.
About a year later, after having been passed up for management twice, I took an events coordination position instead. This involved working with salons and spas to set up events for our clients (and involved a lot of perks). Sounds like a really fun position, right? Believe it or not, I was still really unhappy without that supervisor title. Eventually, after becoming increasingly bitter and expending so much energy on what I couldn't have, I quit the job altogether.
Looking back, I can't believe I couldn't see the fantastic opportunity that had hit me right in the face. I could have used that time to learn so much about networking and managing events, skills that would have directly helped me in the hotel events coordination position I'm in today!
I can't say that I never get hung up on the things that don't matter anymore, but I learned a long and difficult lesson. Take a close look at the circumstances you're in now and try to see the big picture. Are there some things you can let go of? Your life helps you out sometimes and steers you towards the things that are good for you, and away from things that will take you in the wrong direction. If you feel like your stuck, don't keep fighting...take a moment to change your focus and figure out what you can learn - right then and there. If there's a real problem, address it. But don't miss out on the opportunities that are staring you in the face.
